Excerpt from A Real Man (Unedited):

The last thing he wanted to do was hurt her. She was an innocent in all this, but he couldn’t risk this woman running to the authorities and being discovered by those who couldn’t begin to protect him, or help him. He leaned over and calmly whispered against her ear. “I’m not going to hurt you.”

She mumbled something and he felt her relax in his embrace. He loosened his grip a bit, but she immediately reacted, slamming her elbow against his wound. He sucked in a breath as pain exploded instantly through his side, releasing her. She bolted, but he lunged and kicked her feet out from under her, causing her to trip and fall to the floor. She made to scream, but he clambered on her quickly, covering her mouth with his hand once more, his body covering hers.

Her hands reached to claw his eyes and he cursed grabbed her wrists in one of his pinning them to the floor. He grunted as she bucked beneath him, trying to scream through his hand. He leaned the full weight of his body into hers, purposely robbing her of breath. Her eyes grew wide as she struggled to breathe. When she stopped struggling he rose up from her torso and glared down at her. “I swear I will not hurt you, but if you continue to fight me I will. Do you understand?”

She stared up at him with dark eyes, wide with fear and nodded. Slowly, he released her hand, but he held it close to her face as a warning. “If you scream again I’ll knock you out.”

She didn’t say anything, only pressed her lips into a firm line, her breaths coming in quick rasps making her breasts push against the tight tank tee she wore. What was the matter with him noticing that? He’d been curious about women, having seen a couple of his commanding officers, and fellow trainees, but that was it.

Her hair was black like his, but bouncy, springy, standing out on her head in a riot of long curls. Her face was round, delicate dark eyebrows arching over luminous brown eyes. Her cheeks were full, a trim, slightly upturned nose and full, sensuous lips. She was black, but her skin was rich and creamy like mocha, kind of how he liked his coffee, with cream and sugar. Though he and the others were forbidden to have coffee, one of the guards liked him and would bring him a cup on occasion.

Her legs stretched forever under his, her hips were nicely rounded and perfect for gripping. He had to suppress a groan and a new kind of pain took hold of him.

Her eyes widened even further, if possible, obviously feeling his now erect cock pressing into her stomach. “If you rape me there will no place you can hide that I won’t find you and cut your balls off.”

He stared down at her completely stunned. She had guts. He had to give her that. He cleared his throat. “I’m sorry…look I just need your place for only a bit then I will move on out of your life. I promise.”

She didn’t believe him. He could tell by the accusation in her eyes. “Look, I’m going to let you up. Do not try to run, scream, or anything? You cannot beat me. Do you understand?”

She nodded, and he could tell by the way her eyes blinked that she was lying.

Sighing, he prepared himself as he released her. Once up, he maneuvered as she aimed for his now bleeding side, grabbed her wrist and twisted her arm behind her, shoving so that he planted her chest into the wall.

He heard and felt the breath rush from her body. “I told you, you couldn’t beat me so quit trying! I will not hurt you.”

For the first time he heard a sob on her voice. “How can I trust you? I don’t know you. I don’t know what you want. Usually when people break into someone’s home the only thing they mean is harm, yet you keep telling me differently. How do I know you aren’t setting me up?”

Her body was shaking and he sighed. “I don’t know. I can only tell you the truth and hope that in some way you can come to believe me. I won’t be here long. I promise. Just for a little while.” He waited to let his words sink in before he spoke again. “I’m going to try this one more time. I’ll know if you’re lying. I’ll know when you try anything. Can I let you go?”

She didn’t say anything for a moment then finally she sighed in defeat. “Yes. I won’t try anything so just you don’t.”

He could hear surrender. Knew for the time being she wouldn’t try to pull anything. He slowly stepped back and released her.

Turning she stared up at him, backing up a step. He hadn’t realized how tall she was. She probably brushed five foot ten. Once again he felt his cock stir. “So? What now?”
He glanced down at his injured side that had started bleeding again during their tussle, then looked back at her. “Now, help me with this.”

Romance Junkies:
The premise of warrior clones in A REAL MAN is very interesting. I loved the way Ann Lory portrayed Scott as a full-grown man but with the curiosity and insecurities of a bumbling teen on his first date, wanting to reach first base but not knowing where it is or how to get there. His efforts to win Rachel over are endearing, as are Xao and Kyle as they give free advice on what women like—something they know as little about as Scott. Rachel, a woman of mixed race, is strong without being too pushy. This is a book in which the heroes and villains couldn’t be more clearly drawn. A REAL MAN is a good opening salvo in THE REAL MEN trilogy.
